COLLEGE RECRUITMENT
Recruitment FAQs
Important Announcement Regarding Legacies
As of 7/3/2020, Kappa Alpha Theta has eliminated all preferential treatment given to legacies during the recruitment process. This acknowledges that many women are not legacies because their mothers, sisters, grandmothers, and great-grandmothers simply did not have the same access to higher education or the means to join Kappa Alpha Theta. By eliminating preferential treatment for legacies, Theta ensures that PNMs are not receiving additional credit for things beyond their control, such as hometown, race, family connections, etc.
What is the role of the alumnae recommendation in the recruitment process? As alumnae, we value the strong bonds of lifetime sisterhood. This often motivates us to share what we value about Theta with potential new members whom we know personally. Please be assured that our college members spend many hours preparing for recruitment and make every effort to provide each PNM with a positive experience. In addition, know that your letters of reference are highly valued and wisely used during the recruitment process. However, it is important for us, as alumnae members, to understand our role in the membership recruitment process and to adhere to these expectations so that our collegians may conduct the recruitment process fairly. The letter of reference is the appropriate way to communicate this support. Accordingly, college members and advisors should not be receiving messages (texts, emails, voice mails, phone calls, personal visits, etc.) encouraging them to support or not support any potential new member. As collegians, it was our responsibility to select the future members of our chapters; now it is the current college members turn to do so. Please trust in their ability and respect their choices.
Who is eligible to write a letter of reference?
Any alumna in good standing may complete a letter of reference (now called the Reference Information Form, or RIF). Initiated active or inactive college members of a chapter different than the one that a potential new member (PNM) is seeking to join may also complete the RIF.
Is the Reference Information Form required, or will a handwritten note suffice?
The Reference Information Form is now the only acceptable form of reference. Chapters will not be able to accept handwritten notes. It may be (1) printed, completed by hand and mailed to the alumnae chapter Recruitment Officer in the potential member's area, or (2) submitted online in which case a the local Recruitment Officer receives it electronically. To clarify, for a potential new member from Fairfield County, the RIF goes through our chapter. To clarify, if you are writing for a potential new member in a different geographical area, you would send to that alumnae chapter. This is regardless of where the PNM is attending college.
Should I submit the RIF online, or via mail?
Many college chapters prefer to receive online RIFs, and this is becoming more the norm across the country. In the near future, our recruitment process will be conducted totally online. We suggest that you become familiar with how to submit online RIFs, as chapters are increasingly not interested in working with paper documents.
When submitting an online RIF, you will be required to upload the potential new member's information (photo and transcript) as attachments. If you are unsure of how to do this, please seek help or submit a printed RIF via regular mail instead.
Does the alumnae member send the RIF directly to the college chapter?
No. It needs to go through the local Recruitment Reference Board (RRB). The RRB ensures that the form is complete and accurate, determines if additional components are recommended/required based on the college chapter/region, then forwards it to the college chapter.
What are the deadlines for fall and spring recruitment?
All RIFs, whether printed/mailed or online, are due May 1 for fall recruitment. After May 1 the writer of the RIF will be responsible for mailing the RIF directly to the PNM’s college chapter.
Spring recruitment deadlines vary by school. Please email our Recruitment Officer for more information.
How do I submit the RIF online?
Click here to access the online RIF form. You will need your Fraternity login information. When submitting the online RIF, be sure to check the box to send a copy to our chapter Recruitment Officer.
How do I submit the form via mail?
Click here to print the RIF form. You may attach an additional sheet if the space provided is not adequate. Send the signed RIF along with: (1) a photo of the candidate showing her face clearly (2) a copy of her high school transcript, or college transcript for college sophomores/juniors and (3) the candidate’s personal resume, if available, to our Recruitment officer.
Are you a Potential New Member?
If you a college student or high school senior getting ready for sorority recruitment, you will want to obtain Letters of Reference from alumnae of the sororities on your campus. Check your college's Panhellenic website to find out more information about recruitment dates and deadlines.
If you personally know a Theta alumna (or a Theta collegian at a campus other than yours) you may ask her to submit an introduction form for you. You will help her by providing a resume or statement about yourself, your interests, honors, etc. Also provide a high school transcript (it does not need to be an official copy) if possible.
If you are not yet acquainted with a Theta alumna, members of our chapter are available to discuss recruitment and submit an introduction form for you. It's a good idea to work ahead on this, as most college chapters assemble their forms well in advance of the recruitment period. Please contact our Recruitment Officer to get started.
